3 Tips for New Year’s Resolutions

  |     |   Resources

A new year brings immense possibility and optimism. We can start fresh and reach for our goals. It’s no surprise then that New Year’s Eve is such a popular holiday and a universal time of celebration. A big part of that optimism is setting resolutions to help us make the most of the coming year.

Despite the fact that many of us fall short of our lofty resolutions, we keep our positive outlook and keep trying. Have you had trouble maintaining your resolutions? If so, we can help!

We’ve collected the top three tips from experts so you can set and keep your New Year’s resolutions in 2020.

Talk About It

Talking helps. The American Psychological Association has lots of experience studying people who’ve kept their New Year’s resolutions and one of the most common factors was verbalizing the resolution and sharing updates with others. This helps keep you motivated and accountable, so don’t just keep it to yourself. Also, tackle one resolution at a time and share your success so others can help provide positive reinforcement.

Find the Reason

Just picking a New Year’s resolution isn’t likely to stick. Take some time to think about what you’d like to accomplish in the coming year and how it’s going to benefit you in a direct way. This benefit can be a key motivator. We love these recommendations from Forbes to find something you really want to do and then work in a team. By collaborating with others, you’ll have a built-in support system!

Use What You’ve Got

Don’t forget to take stock in what tools and resources you have access too. Instead of expending energy to get something new, you can use what’s available to you. For example, if working out more consistently is a goal, you don’t have to join a gym, which can be pricey and might require you having to significantly alter your schedule. Rather, make a commitment to yourself to use the fitness center. Our community has a state-of-the-art and cutting-edge fitness center that our residents have access to. Start by visiting the fitness center a few times a week and walking around the community when the weather is nicer. You’re likely to find that you already have a lot of tools at your disposal.

As you prepare for the coming New Year’s celebrations, we hope that these tips are helpful. We believe it’s how you live that matters and identifying ways to improve your life is a key part of personal growth. We also believe that sharing those resolutions will keep us all motivated. So, we encourage you to share your resolutions with us on our Facebook page.

Happy New Year!
